From Tent Roof to a Simple Ringlock FOH Booth: Balancing Cost, Transport and Stability

A temporary event structure does not always become better by adding more components.

Sometimes the more important question is:

What does this particular event actually need, and how far can we simplify the structure without losing the functions that matter?

We recently encountered this question while discussing a small sound-control booth for a festival.

The customer originally considered a more complete tent-roof solution. As the discussion developed, however, budget, production time, transportation, sun protection and structural stability gradually changed the proposal.

The final solution was much simpler than the original idea—but it was not simply a matter of removing components to reduce price.

The real process was deciding what could be simplified, what should remain available, and what should be prepared for future use.

Project Background: A Small Sound-Control Room for a Festival

The customer needed a small temporary structure for sound control at a festival.

The required size was approximately:

2 × 2 × 3 m

The structure needed to provide a working space for the sound-control equipment and operator, while the surrounding curtain would provide:

  • sun protection;

  • some privacy;

  • separation of the equipment from the surrounding event area.

The original idea was to use an aluminum structure with a tent-style roof.

This was understandable. A more complete roof structure could provide a more substantial shelter and prepare the booth for changing weather conditions.

But this particular project had two practical constraints:

time and budget.

The event was approaching, and the customer wanted to keep the structure as simple as reasonably possible.

The First Decision: Did This Event Really Need the Full Roof Solution?

During the discussion, the immediate weather concern was mainly sun protection rather than rain.

That changed the priority.

Instead of insisting that the customer complete the more elaborate roof structure before the event, we considered whether a much simpler temporary enclosure could satisfy the current requirement.

The answer, based on the intended use at that time, was yes.

A small modular Ringlock frame with a top canopy and side curtains could provide the shaded control area the customer needed without waiting for the complete tent-roof concept to be produced.

Interestingly, this configuration did not begin as a festival sound-control structure.

The original product was developed as a small modular booth for applications such as markets, malls and temporary trade stalls.

The same basic structure could therefore be reinterpreted for a different function:

market booth → festival sound-control booth / FOH control structure.

This is one of the practical advantages of a modular system. The same structural components can sometimes be reorganized around a different operational requirement instead of developing an entirely new structure from zero.

The Second Decision: The Customer Wanted to Remove the Diagonal Braces

After simplifying the roof, the customer wanted to simplify the frame further.

His thinking was practical:

If we can use fewer components, the structure is easier to handle and there is less material to transport.

So he initially considered building the booth mainly from the vertical standards and horizontal ledgers, without diagonal braces.

For a small booth without significant additional equipment attached to the structure, we understood why he wanted to keep the configuration minimal.

But then the customer raised another question himself:

If the frame only has vertical and horizontal members, will it feel stable enough?

This was where the discussion changed again.

Simple Does Not Mean Removing Every Component

Based on our practical experience with Ringlock structures, we explained that diagonal bracing can make a noticeable difference to the rigidity of the frame.

The customer was trying to balance two different objectives:

fewer components and easier transport

versus

better frame stability when required.

For the immediate lightweight booth application, he wanted the simplest possible configuration.

But if additional equipment or other significant loads were later introduced to the structure, or if the actual project conditions required greater structural stability, the bracing question should be reconsidered rather than assuming that the minimum configuration would remain suitable.

We therefore recommended that he keep diagonal braces available.

The customer understood the reasoning and finally purchased four diagonal braces so they could be added when required.

This was a small change to the order, but it represented an important change in the decision:

We did not simply add every possible component to the quotation, and we did not simply remove every component to achieve the lowest price.

Instead, the customer kept the simplified configuration while retaining an additional structural option for actual site requirements.

A Third Consideration: Do Not Design Only for This One Event

There was another important part of the customer's request.

The simplified canopy-and-curtain arrangement was mainly intended to solve the immediate festival requirement.

But the customer still wanted us to manufacture the more complete tent roof afterward.

More importantly, he did not want the temporary solution purchased for this event to become useless once the new roof was completed.

His requirement was that the future tent roof should, as far as the final design allowed, work with the existing roof/curtain arrangement so that the components could continue to be reused.

That changed the discussion from:

“What is the cheapest booth we can use this time?”

to:

“How can today's simplified solution remain useful when the system is upgraded later?”

This is a much more valuable way to think about modular temporary structures.

Compatibility between existing and future components should be considered before the later system is finalized. Connection interfaces, dimensions and actual component compatibility must be checked against the final configuration rather than assumed.

The Final Solution

For the immediate festival, the proposal became a compact 2 × 2 × 3 m Ringlock sound-control booth.

The main concept consisted of:

  • modular Ringlock vertical and horizontal members;

  • a simple top canopy for sun protection;

  • side curtains for shade, privacy and equipment separation;

  • four diagonal braces supplied for use when additional frame rigidity was required;

  • a future tent-roof solution to be developed with compatibility with the existing canopy/curtain arrangement considered during the final design.

The important point is not that this was the most elaborate solution.

It was deliberately not.

The proposal had been reduced to match the immediate event requirement while keeping a path open for the customer's later upgrade.

How the Quotation Evolved

The quotation therefore did not move in a straight line.

The decision process was approximately:

Initial idea:
Aluminum structure + tent roof

Immediate constraint:
Limited time + pressure to control cost

Actual event priority:
Festival sound control + sun protection + privacy

Simplified solution:
2 × 2 × 3 m modular Ringlock booth + canopy + curtain

Further simplification considered:
Remove diagonal braces to reduce components and transportation

Customer concern:
Would a frame made mainly from vertical and horizontal members feel sufficiently stable?

Our practical recommendation:
Keep diagonal bracing available when greater frame rigidity is required

Quotation modification:
Add four diagonal braces

Future requirement:
Develop the tent roof while considering compatibility with the existing canopy/curtain components.

This is why we consider this project more than a simple product quotation.

The final structure was shaped by a sequence of practical decisions.

What This Project Taught Us: Simplification Should Have a Purpose

The most useful lesson from this case is not that a simple Ringlock booth is always better than a tent-roof structure.

It is that simplification should follow the real requirement.

In this project, the customer initially tried to simplify for understandable reasons:

  • lower cost;

  • less material;

  • easier transportation;

  • faster preparation.

Some simplification made sense.

The complete tent roof was not essential for the customer's immediate sun-protection requirement, so the simpler canopy allowed the project to move forward.

But the diagonal-bracing discussion showed the other side of simplification.

Removing a component simply because it reduces quantity is not the same as determining that the component is unnecessary for every future configuration.

A useful temporary structure therefore should not be designed according to only one question:

“How much can we remove?”

A better question is:

“What does this application actually require, and which components may become necessary when the operating conditions change?”

That distinction matters especially in modular event structures, where the same equipment may later be reused, expanded or adapted for another event.

Experience-Based Judgment vs. Engineering Verification

The discussion about diagonal braces in this case came from our practical experience with Ringlock structures and the customer's intended use.

It should not be interpreted as a project-specific structural calculation or certified statement that a particular bracing configuration is sufficient for every 2 × 2 × 3 m booth.

Actual structural requirements can change with factors such as:

  • final dimensions;

  • attached equipment;

  • roof and curtain configuration;

  • site conditions;

  • environmental exposure;

  • intended use;

  • the complete structural arrangement.

Where loads, wind exposure, safety-critical attachments or other significant structural conditions are involved, the final configuration should be evaluated according to the specific project requirements.

FAQ

Can a small Ringlock booth be assembled without diagonal braces?

For a lightweight temporary booth without significant attached equipment, a customer may want to minimize the number of components. However, diagonal bracing can materially improve frame rigidity.

Whether braces are required for a particular structure should depend on the complete configuration and actual site/use conditions. A simplified historical configuration should not be treated as a universal engineering rule.

Why did this customer still buy four diagonal braces?

The customer initially wanted fewer components for easier transportation. After discussing the difference between the simplest frame and a more rigid braced configuration, he decided to keep four diagonal braces available so they could be installed when needed.

Why didn't we insist on the complete tent roof immediately?

The immediate project requirement was primarily sun protection for a festival sound-control position, while production time and budget were also important.

The simpler canopy-and-curtain configuration could address that immediate requirement, while the more complete tent roof could be developed afterward.

Can the same Ringlock booth be used for purposes other than sound control?

The structure in this case was actually adapted from a modular booth originally intended for market or trade-stall applications.

Its use as a sound-control booth illustrates how modular temporary structures can sometimes be adapted to different functions. The actual configuration should still be reviewed according to the intended application.
