The customer already had a 6.1 m diameter round stage.
Access to the stage was not a new requirement. He already had a working stair arrangement made from standard rectangular stage steps.
The existing solution was simple:
three straight stair modules;
approximately 1 m wide each;
placed side by side;
two steps per module;
approximately 3 m total access width.
Functionally, it worked.
Visually, however, the stairs remained straight while the front edge of the stage was circular.
The customer's request was therefore not:
“I need stairs for my stage.”
It was more specific:
“I need 3 meters of curved stairs, two steps.”
That small change—from straight to curved—was where the quotation process started.
The customer's existing solution used ordinary rectangular stage stairs in front of the round stage.
Three approximately 1 m wide stair units were placed beside each other to create a total entrance width of around 3 m.
Each unit had two levels.
This gave the customer the access width he wanted, but the geometry of the stairs did not follow the circular edge of the stage.

The important point is that we did not need to change the basic modular idea.
The customer already liked the 3 m overall access width.
What needed to change was the geometry.
When the customer first asked for the curved stairs, his message was:
“3 meter of curved stairs; 2 steps.”
Before making a quotation, we needed to know what circle those stairs were supposed to follow.
We first asked whether the stage diameter was 10 m or 6 m, because the initial information was not completely clear.
The customer clarified:
6.10 meter — 6 m and 10 centimeter.
That immediately gave us the basic curved geometry.
The stair was not an independent decorative arc.
It needed to follow the front perimeter of an existing 6.1 m diameter circular stage.
The next question was:
What height does the stair need to reach?
Initially, the customer did not know.
He needed to return home and measure the existing stage.
That is a very normal part of customized quotation work.
Instead of guessing from a standard stage height, we waited for the actual measurement.
The next day, the customer confirmed:
“The highest step may be 35 cm.”
That gave us the second key condition:
round stage diameter: 6.1 m
stage / highest stair level: approximately 0.35 m
stair arrangement: two steps
required curved access length: approximately 3 m
Only after those dimensions were clear could the stair geometry be defined properly.
There was one misunderstanding during the quotation that is worth keeping in this Case Study.
After confirming the diameter and height, we prepared a quotation for:
6.1 m diameter round stage, 0.35 m high, with a 3 m long circular two-step staircase.
But that was not what the customer actually wanted to buy.
He replied:
“I would only need the stairs without the stage.”
We had interpreted the dimensions as a request for a complete new stage-and-stair package.
The customer was actually giving us the dimensions of his existing stage so that we could make stairs to match it.
So the quotation was corrected from:
complete round stage + curved stairs
to:
curved stairs only.
This looks like a small communication mistake, but it exposes an important rule in custom structural quotation:
A customer may provide the dimensions of an existing structure without asking you to supply that structure.
Before finalizing a BOQ, we need to distinguish:
What already exists?
from:
What does the customer actually need us to supply?

Once the quotation was narrowed to the staircase only, the customer asked another important question:
“Is the inner curve 3 meter or the outer curve?”
For a straight staircase, saying “3 m wide” is usually straightforward.
For a curved staircase, it is not.

In this project, the approximately 3 m dimension referred to the inner curved side of the complete staircase run.
That definition mattered because it determined the module geometry.
This is a useful lesson for any circular or curved platform:

The final solution remained modular, but because it was a two-step staircase, the complete assembly contained six curved stage sections:

The inner curved side of the complete three-module run was approximately 3 m in total, so each inner module was approximately 1 m along that curved edge.
Conceptually:

The module count logic was therefore surprisingly similar.
We did not turn a simple modular stair into one oversized custom component.
We changed the shape of the modules.
This is the main decision in the case.
The customer's original stairs already demonstrated a useful pattern:
Three smaller stair modules can be combined to create one wide entrance.
There was no good reason to abandon that principle when changing to a curved staircase.
A single 3 m long curved component would be larger to manufacture, handle, transport and store.
Instead, the final design kept the sectional approach.

Those questions were not separate marketing questions.
They came because the customer was deciding whether the proposed stair could actually be used with his event stage.

The decision to keep the staircase modular rather than producing one very large curved section reflects practical manufacturing, transport, storage and event-equipment handling considerations.
This case does not provide verified:
stair load calculations;
occupancy rating;
structural certification;
outdoor weather rating;
code compliance;
engineering approval.
Those should not be invented merely because the stair resembles other modular stage systems.
