Stair & Walkway Structure focuses on temporary access routes used to connect different heights, platforms and functional areas within modular structures.
As part of our Access Structure system, stairs and walkways are not treated simply as accessories. They form the routes that allow personnel to enter, leave and move between different parts of a temporary structure.
From our project experience, access should be considered together with the main structural layout. Once a project contains several platform levels or separated working areas, the question is no longer only where people need to work, but also how they move between those positions.
This is the main role of Stair & Walkway Structure.
A temporary access route can contain several functional modules.
Stairs provide vertical access between different elevations.
Depending on the project, they may connect:
ground and platform levels;
different working-platform heights;
multiple technical levels;
temporary seating areas;
stage or production structures.
The required height and available installation area influence the stair configuration and its relationship with the surrounding structure.
Walkways provide horizontal access between different areas.
They can connect working platforms, structural zones or technical positions where direct ground access is impractical.
A walkway may be relatively short and simply bridge two adjacent structural areas, or it may form a longer elevated access route within a larger temporary project.
When access changes direction or connects several elevations, an intermediate platform can provide a transition between stairs, walkways and the destination structure.
This means that stairs, walkways and platforms often work as one access route rather than as isolated components.
The functional relationship can be understood as:
Starting Point → Stair / Walkway → Intermediate Platform → Destination
One of the important lessons from temporary structure projects is that access should not always be added after the main structure has already been configured.
For a simple platform, one stair may be sufficient.
But as a project becomes larger or develops into several levels, the access route can influence the overall structural layout.
The position of stairs may affect the usable platform area.
An elevated walkway requires supporting points at appropriate locations.
A connection between two structures must consider the relative height and position of both sides.
For this reason, we treat access as a functional part of the structural configuration, rather than simply selecting a stair after the rest of the project has been completed.
A Working Platform Structure creates the place where personnel perform their work.
A Stair & Walkway Structure creates the route used to reach that working area.
The two therefore solve different parts of the same problem:
Working Platform = where people work
Stair & Walkway = how people reach and move between working areas
In a simple project, these functions may be contained within one structure. In larger projects, several working platforms can be connected through dedicated stair and walkway modules.
Temporary access routes are also important within event structures.
A Stage & Platform Structure may require stairs between ground and performance level.
A FOH & Control Structure may require stairs and intermediate platforms connecting several technical levels.
A Seating & Grandstand Structure may require access routes between different audience levels and circulation areas.
In these applications, the access structure performs a different function from the stage, FOH or grandstand itself, but it must work with their dimensions and elevations.
This is why stairs and walkways can become important structural modules within larger temporary projects.
Different access systems can also be combined within the same project.
For example, an existing Ringlock structure may provide the main supporting framework while aluminum stair, platform or walkway modules are adapted to provide lighter and more practical access between levels.
